Fine, soft, white sand swells in small dunes dotted with sea daffodils. Behind, separated by pines, the reddish waters of the pool and salt marshes, for which the beach is named. Le Saline is one of the pearls of the territory of Calasetta, only a few kilometres away, in the island of Sant'Antioco, the largest by size in the Sulcis archipelago. The water, transparent at the shoreline, fades to every shade of blue farther out. The seabed is clear and gently sloping, making it ideal for children or less expert swimmers.
The beach has a large car park, bar-kiosque, beach equipment for hire, campsite and hotel. This is the ideal destination for surfers, and is popular with underwater fishing, diving and snorkelling enthusiasts. In the pools, a wide variety of local birdlife finds food and a place to rest. At less crowded times of year, you can get up close to magnificent pink flamingos, herons and black-winged stilts.
Near Le Saline, there are another two (almost) town beaches - Spiaggia Grande and Sottotorre. Within the territory of Calasetta, the island of Sant'Antioco has areas that can only be reached by boat, on foot or by mountain bike. Jewel such as the suggestive beach of Mangiabarche to the north-west, with its characteristic lighthouse on the rock it faces, and CalaLunga to the east, an inlet with emerald green water that leads from the open sea to a stretch of sand sheltered from the wind and sea currents, surrounded by Mediterranean brush.
