Stagno di Sa Curcurica

  3. Stagno di Sa Curcurica

South of Capo Comino, along the rocky north-eastern coast of Sardinia, lie three wetlands that form enchanting landscapes, true oases. They are the Berchida marsh, fed by the stream of the same name, the Bidderosa marsh, at times flooded by seawater, and the Sa Curcurica marsh, fed by two streams: Rio Pischina and Rio Sa Mela. The most scenic is Sa Curcurica (the Sardinian word for "common moorhen"), which is backed by steep walls of pink granite rock interspersed with pine woods and Mediterranean maquis: an enchanted landscape, with the emerald colours of the pond's water, fed as it is by a crystal-clear sea. These wetland habitats are home to a varied migratory and resident bird population: great cormorant, little egret, heron, flamingo, black-winged stilt, kingfisher and others. There are also amphibians and reptiles, such as the European green toad, the Sardinian tree frog and the European pond turtle.

Take SS 125 from Orosei in the direction of Cala Ginepro. At the crossroads to Cala Ginepro turn right (follow the signs to the Hotel I Giardini) and turn left immediately after passing the hotel. The Sa Curcurica pond is a few hundred metres down the road.

The wetland is included in a protected area, managed by the Forest Agency, covering 860 ha. The surrounding area offers a choice of bars/restaurants and hotels.
