It is surrounded by a green ‘strip’ of fragrant pines and junipers, dotted with white dunes, with granite rocks on the borders and a cliff where tiny pebbly coves emerge. Above all, it is embellished by a sea so transparent that it looks like a swimming pool. Campulongu is rightfully considered one of those beaches with a Caribbean atmosphere along the Villasimius coast, as well as in the marine protected area of Capo Carbonara. You can admire a strip of soft, white sand about a kilometre long, in front of a sea with a deep turquoise colour. The waters are shallow for a few dozen metres, making it ideal for families with children, who frequent the beach also thanks to the nearby pine forest that provides shelter from the sun during the hottest hours.
On the beach and in the surrounding area, you will find all the services you need: parking, refreshment areas, canoes, windsurf and beach equipment rentals and a diving centre. On the subject of water sports, Campulongu is a particularly popular spot for kite surfing during the low season, thanks to its exposure to the westerly and southwesterly winds. In the water, you will find yourself swimming in the company of numerous varieties of fish: with a mask and snorkel you’ll have the chance to observe various species, such as sea bream, amberjacks, groupers and damselfish.
Moving south, beyond the cliff, you will find the Spiaggia del Riso (Beach of Rice): the name comes from the white grains of quartz, mixed with the sand, that look like grains of rice. You will also see rounded rocks emerging from the sea and on the beach, giving the beach an almost lunar appearance, especially at sunset. Next to the beach, there is a tourist port, where you can set off on an excursion to admire the ‘treasures’ of the protected area: the islands of Cavoli and Serpentara, the shallows populated by a rich fish fauna and the submerged rocks ‘inhabited’ by yellow cluster anemones and gorgonian corals, as well as the wreckages of several ships. On the opposite side of the Capo Carbonara promontory, there is a stretch of enchanting scenery: Porto Giunco, with the pond of Notteri, Simius, is Traias and Punta Molentis behind it, features white beaches and waters with shimmering colours, reflecting infinite shades of blue and green. Then, to the west of Campulongu lie sandy beaches between the rocky cliffs: the first is Cuccureddus, followed by the larger Campus and the last beach within the Simius territory, with its unusual three-arched shape: Porto sa Ruxi.
