Even though it is about ten kilometres from the town, it is the quintessential beach of Sassari: a huge expanse of light sand washed by a sea of iridescent colours, ranging from green to blue. The beach of Platamona - its name indicates a flat, wide surface - is the longest and deepest beach along the entire coastline and extends from Porto Torres to Castelsardo: it stretches from the tower of Abbacurrente and joins the Marina of Sorso. The entire strip of coast is about 15 kilometres long, its width ranges from 10 to 30 metres and it is divided into public beaches, or ‘pettini’, as the Sardinians call them, in the Municipalities of Porto Torres, Sassari and Sorso.
The composition of the sand varies according to the area: medium-grained, solid and golden-coloured in the easternmost area, becoming gradually lighter as you move towards the west, where there are little dunes on which you will find bushes of Mediterranean scrub and coastal flora, among which sea daffodils. In some stretches, there are also smooth little pebbles and shells, brought there by the currents of the sea. In numerous places, you will see the dunes, intact, with a large, welcoming forest behind them and as long as the beach.
In the immediate vicinity, there is a body of fresh water of the same name, fed by the rivulet of Buddi Buddi, where great egrets, mallards and western swamphens nest. The shallow waters and sandy seabed make it ideal for families with children. When the wind blows, the sea brings surfing and windsurfing enthusiasts endless emotions. Platamona is very popular with bathers, also thanks to the numerous services available. It has ample parking, also equipped for camper vans, camping areas and can be accessed by the disabled. You will be able to rent beach equipment allowing you to spend relaxing moments, and pedalos for sailing along the coast.
